SYSPRO ERP Helps Automotive Suppliers Outpace the Competition

Automotive Suppliers Boost Performance with SYSPRO ERP

LAS VEGAS (October 30, 2012) – SYSPRO, a developer of best-of-breed, award-winning enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for on-premise and cloud-based utilization, announced today the company will take advantage of its appearance at the SEMA / AAPEX Show in Booth 32008 to show how automotive suppliers using SYSPRO ERP have boosted operational efficiencies.

For more than thirty years, Southern Calif.-based Airflow Research Heads Inc. (AFR), has been defining technology leadership in cylinder head manufacturing and flow dynamics. AFR, in fact, pioneered the CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) porting of Small Block Chevy and Ford heads as well as Big Block Chevy heads. (“Porting” opens up, re-configures and re-surfaces the ports of cylinder heads to enable engines to breathe easier and more efficiently and therefore produce more power.) The company also pioneered the introduction of high performance Gen-2 LS1 aftermarket heads.

AFR had been using a simple accounting package, but the software lacked the ability to communicate with the shop to determine if schedules were being met; it generated limited bills of material and provided no shop routing capability. After an in-depth evaluation of several ERP vendors, Airflow selected SYSPRO ERP based upon functionality and solid endorsements by SYSPRO users.

A dedicated terminal is now in place at each Airflow CNC shop work center and connected to the central server through a custom DNC interface specifically developed by SYSPRO USA. In addition, a special label material was developed to withstand the harsh machining and cleaning environment and which would adhere to a bare cast aluminum surface. Today, each individual head has a bar code label attached at the beginning of the manufacturing cycle. The bar codes are scanned at each succeeding work center to log into and out of the operation, thereby providing real time WIP (Work in Process) tracking. Tracking individual product directly rather than using shop travelers also eliminates the ongoing problem of lost documentation and creates a truly paperless work environment. In addition, the DNC interface is connected to AFR’s CNC programming library. Therefore, each time a job is scanned, checks determine whether the right program is loaded into the machine control and, if not, the correct program is called up to prevent machine crashes and scrapped parts.

The AFR sales department uses the SYSPRO product configurator exclusively for all sales order transactions. The configurator allows the sales staff to completely customize the specific heads at the time of order placement to meet each customer’s need for various levels of performance up to and including today’s fastest race cars.

SYSPRO CRM is also used exclusively by the AFR sales department personnel for all customer transactions.

How has SYSPRO software enhanced the operational efficiency at AFR? Airflow spokesperson summarizes: “Thanks to the SYSPRO software, we now have measurements on how good we are…We never had the visibility before.”

Telemark, a privately held corporation located in Sturgis, Michigan, offers 30 different product lines; however, the majority of the firm’s business is the printing of automatic teller receipts. The next biggest market for the company is the printing of parking tickets. Each order is, in fact, a custom order because every individual form must be individually imprinted with the logo of a bank, municipality or institution. With the abundance of small orders, the burden of accurately tracking each order is vital. Because Telemark sells through a network of resellers, the company also has to be able to respond to numerous order status inquiries.

After failure with a broad-based ERP solution and after much research, Telemark purchased SYSPRO ERP software.

SYSPRO has helped Telemark become more lean by adjusting the inventory levels of blank forms. While the company used to ‘guesstimate’ stock levels, the historical records provided by the new system enables it to gauge future orders and adjust inventory levels accordingly. In fact, Telemark’s inventory turns went from three to nine per year, a dramatic increase.

Most importantly, the implementation of the SYSPRO system helped Telemark become profitable. A follow up letter from Telemark to their SYSPRO reseller, noted, “Please let your people know how pleased I am with the SYSPRO solution. In fact, our satisfaction is best summarized by my accountant who simply says, ‘I love this system.'”
